1892: James Naismith publishes the rules of basketball. It includes 16 pages on how players can defend themselves from paternity suits.


1969: The Soviet Union launches Soyuz 5 in hopes of finding decent toilet paper.


1976: Gerald Ford's would-be assassin, Sara Jane Moore, is sentenced to life in prison. Had she been successful, Moore would have been given a suspended sentence.
