1864: Union General William Tecumseh Sherman burns Atlanta, Georgia. CNN would have covered it, but it was too busy reporting on a runaway stage coach chase.


2002: Hu Jintao becomes general secretary of the Communist Party of China. Everyone else in the country was too busy working to notice.


2005: Boeing formally launches the super-sized Boeing 747-8 variant, which is intended to force distracted pilots to only miss their intended runway by no more than 149 miles.
