The Magic of 2011

What is this, has something disturbed our sun in the new year? Has some ring of power given us a sign that all is not well with our old friend in the sky? Or is it my mediocre photography that has offended some of the powers that be? And at one of my favourite photo haunts too.

No, don't be afraid. The New Year has not turned my head completely. It is just the effect of a circular polarizing filter pointed straight at the sun - for fun.

Sunday's Psalm--Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.

Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

O God, with your judgment endow the king,

and with your justice, the king’s son;

He shall govern your people with justice

and your afflicted ones with judgment.

 Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

Justice shall flower in his days,
and profound peace, till the moon be no more.
May he rule from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.

Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts;
the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute.
All kings shall pay him homage,
all nations shall serve him.

Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out,

and the afflicted when he has no one to help him.

He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor;

the lives of the poor he shall save.

Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

Happy New Year!

2010 was a great year for Jane Douglas and me. We started a business and a blog, helped a bunch of clients and had a great time in the exciting Atlanta design community. With several new clients on board, we are looking forward to a fantastic 2011! Happy New Year!

Pay Freeze
New York's new Governor Andrew Cuomo is proposing a one-year freeze on state worker pay... mostly because he doesn't want to pay as much for hookers as Governor Spitzer.

New Sex Shop
A new drive-thru sex toy shop in Huntsville, Alabama offers privacy for customers. It's located right next to the private wedding chapel where people can quietly marry their cousins.

New Duran Duran Album
Duran Duran says it wants to focus on the "now" with its new album... mostly because their brains are too fried from drugs to remember the 1980's.

Online Doctors Visits
Studies show more and more medical practices are examining patients online... and for some people, taking off their clothes in front of a webcam isn't so unusual.

Facebook Investment
Goldman Sachs has just invested $500 million in Facebook… but no matter how much money those Wall Street jerks put in, they can’t get Scarlett Johansson to accept their friend requests.

January 3rd

1496: Leonardo da Vinci unsuccessfully tests a flying machine. The machine actually worked, he was just stopped from getting aboard by the TSA.

1861: Delaware votes not to secede from the United States. No one noticed either way.

1932: Martial law is declared in Honduras to stop a revolt by banana workers… and get them to stop singing that “Day-Oh” song over and over too.

January 2nd

533: Mercurius becomes Pope John II, the first pope to adopt a new name upon elevation to the papacy and to avoid any more damn credit offers in the mail.

1974: President Richard Nixon signs a bill lowering the maximum U.S. speed limit to 55 MPH… mostly to help the flagging career of Sammy Hagar.

2004: Samples are successfully collected from Comet Wild 2, and after analysis, it’s determined that the comet is responsible for several unsolved sex crimes.

January 1st

1899: Spanish rule ends in Cuba. Spain hasn’t had a decent shortstop since.

1908: For the first time, a ball is dropped in New York City's Times Square to signify the start of the New Year. New Yorkers had already been marking the event by publicly urinating in Times Square for decades.

1986: Aruba becomes independent of CuraƧao, though it continues to show up for the happy hour drink specials at the Hilton.
