Evening at Toftøy

James at Newtown Area Photo has started a meme called Weekend Reflections that is very promising. Post a reflection during the week-end and give him a notice - and you're on.

My contribution is from a small island called Toftøy, close to the North Sea.

Alaska Bits -- 13 -- with a SkyWatch

We had two major excursions while in Fairbanks, and though totally designed for the tourist, they were so well orchestrated that you almost didn't notice. (Well, not till you got to the gift shop, anyway.)

The one was a trip on the Chena River on the Riverboat Discovery. Expecting just a quiet boat ride, you are surprised by the entertainment and education provided. The first event was the take off and landing of a bush plane on the river by your side.

That's the original Discovery I docked over by the shore. We were on the Discovery III, with three decks and both indoor and outdoor seating, but otherwise very similar in construction. And that is the plane about to take off in the foreground.

Off the ground now--or should I say off the river. As in Anchorage, many small planes in Fairbanks boast floats in the summer and skis for winter landings. Their landing strip is the same either way, the Chena River.

This is where I pop in with the SkyWatch notice. You can see lots of other sky views from around the world today linked at the SkyWatch site.

The small plane made several swoops of the area as our commentator talked with the pilot about flying in the bush.

...demonstrating how he could share his "runway" with the boat...

...quite closely, before he flew off home.

Our next presentation was a visit with some sled dogs eager to show their stuff. those dogs want to pull. It's what they live for.

This is the kennel of Susan Butcher, who won the Iditarod three times. Susan passed away a couple of years ago from leukemia. Her family continues to raise the dogs and her husband told us about sledding...

...before hooking the team up for a summertime training run. The four wheeler (motorless) has to be anchored while they hook up the team or they would take off with it before he could get on.

And they are off! Get that gate open! They aren't going to wait for anything. The other dogs in the kennels climb on top of their doghouses or rush to the fence--excited for their friends but a little jealous because they don't get to go this time.
~
The final stop on our tour before returning to dock was a model Athabascan village, where young people from various native groups explained the life in a village, at fish camp, and many traditions that they still preserve

At last, Cottage season over.

Cottage season over - PERIOD.Today we cut down the perennial plants and covered the balcony openings with plastics. Now the nature can take over with wind, rain, cold and snow although the lawn is still green and the sun is giving warm and healthy beams. We will look forward to the early spring when rhubarb again will show up and the new generation of flowers appear through the melting snow. The end of season made un have a unplanned or random lunch at Cafe Cristiania with a perfect white wine. Try it.For those of you not being satisfied with your their local weather, the rumors tell that on Saturday and during next week, we here in south east Norway will experience lot of rainfall. That is why I today strolled down the neighborhood streets, visited fru Burum´s and felt happy.
Have a nice weekend al over the world.

Alaska Bits--12--While in Fairbanks

The sculpture entitled "First Family" in Fairbanks purposely does not have clearly identifiable facial features. This is to avoid trying to second guess which of the many native groups might have been the first Alaskan residents.

Fairbanks has an easily walked downtown with some interesting buildings, a couple of museums and some well recommended restaurants. These two reflections struck me during our stroll.

On an excursion out of Fairbanks, we stopped to visit an above ground portion of the Alaska Oil Pipeline.

This map of the pipeline was made from a piece of the pipe material.

Bench of the week (27) - Goathland station

I had sort of thought of using some benches from London this time. Not so. The one(s) I had were even below my standard. So I thought - why not use some British railway benches I had on file, and then I would also be able to continue my motif of station benches from last week? So here they are:
Goathland railway station is a station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and serves the village of Goathland in North Yorkshire, England. It is famous for appearing in the television series Heartbeat and as Hogsmeade station the Hogwarts Express stop at in the Harry Potter films.
All information from Wikipedia, of course. I also did them in black & white. I felt it suited a veteran railway.

I have now been showing benches once a week for half a year. Maybe I should do something else?
