It is Summer

It is Summer in Oslo. Our first BBQ this year at Tullarbo together with this year inhabitants: Rikke, Tor Marius and Maja.
The apple flowers are opening their face against the warm sun, and at this paradise the troublesome situation for the Palestinian people is hard to imagine.Maja har got a new favorite meal, Lompe with ketchup. Potetlefse (potato lefse) is often used in place of a hot-dog bun and can be used to roll up sausages. This is also known as pølse med lompe in Norway, lompe being the "smaller-cousin" of the potato lefse.

ABC Wednesday--T is for

T is for Tiny        Here is a collection of some of the tiny things we saw while hiking this weekend, beginning with the tiny sprouts of the fiddlehead ferns. they looked like copper wires sticking out of the mulch of the forest floor.
And the calypso orchid which stands only about three inches high.

This tiny mushroom was only about two inches, but then we found these unusual fungus, which we were assured are edible. They reminded us a bit of gummy bears. they are less than an inch.

None of them matched the tiny mushrooms we saw in the fall a couple of years ago.

Which were eclipsed by some even tinier.

ABC Wednesday coming down to the end of the Sixth Round.

Going Hollywood
The Obama administration has met with Titanic director James Cameron to see if he has any ideas on how to plug the BP oil well. This comes just months after the White House formed its health care reform bill while consulting with Lindsay Lohan.

Oil in Florida
The BP oil slick could hit Florida today. The state is scrambling to stop the oil from coming ashore, mostly by borrowing Arizona's border guards.

Iran Runs to the Dollar
Because the euro is crashing, Iran is emptying its treasury to buy more dollars... or as the mullahs put it, they're holding the dollars hostage.

Gore Divorce
Al and Tipper Gore are splitting up after 40 years of marriage. The last straw for Tipper was when Al started using recycled condoms.

Knievel Honored
The Harley-Davidson Museum will open a new exhibit this summer paying tribute to Evel Knievel. This is in addition to the permanent exhibit honoring Knievel at the Orthopedics Hall of Fame.

1886: President Grover Cleveland marries Frances Folsom in the White House, becoming the only president to wed in the executive mansion, and the only president NOT to have sex in the White House.

1999: After banning TV for decades, the Bhutan Broadcasting Service brings television transmissions for the first time. Luckily, the BBS simply simulcasts CNN, so no one in that country has still ever watched TV.

1979: Pope John Paul II visits his native Poland, becoming the first Pope to visit a Communist country since John XXIII visited Massachusetts.

Signs of my world

The City Daily Photo group have a theme day on the first of every month. Though I gave up my Yakima Valley Daily Photo blog almost a year ago, I enjoyed participating in these theme days. Today they are posting funny signs, and I thought I would join their world with this one picked up on our camping trip this weekend when we stopped in at the Visitor Center at Paradise.

I couldn't decide if there was a difference in the weather. Lower down in the old growth forest, there was not much difference in the 40% chance of rain and the 85% chance of rain while it was falling.

This was My World this last weekend.

T is for Treatment,Transported, and Transfixed

On a personal note: I have been well Treated for my respiratory affliction (a consequence of The medical Therapy I need after my heart Transplant some years ago). The Treatment was 1. class in every way from Top to bottom. In addition, my daily view has also changed from what will always be a fairly colourless hospital room to more saturated daily surroundings

On a more serious note: I usually do not mix politics with pictures, but Today I must. On returning home from hospital I learned that an unarmed convoy Transporting relief aid from the Free World to the blockaded Gaza area had been attacked by Israeli naval forces in international waters. Maybe Ten people were killed. The convoy was among other Things carrying such dangerous commodities as Textbooks and Teddy-bears. Hundreds of voluntary participants have been illegally arrested, among Them Three Norwegians.

I was Transfixed at This Tremendous Transgression of Transnational Treaties. I Trust That This Treatment by the Israeli government does not represent the True will of The Israeli people.

100th post! 1989 Renovation of my Church Hill House in Richmond - Part I

To celebrate our one hundredth post on the Whitehaven blog, I decided to post about the 100 year old row house that my husband and I renovated in Richmond in 1989/90. My husband bought the house in 1988 before we were engaged. And so when we became affianced and it was apparent that we were going to live in this house, I figured out we had to completely gut this thing. Here's why...

The house in the sad condition it was in on closing day when purchased by my husband (then boyfriend)- hang on here folks!

The exterior brick had a coat of pinky red paint on it - we stripped that off (see first photo above for the "after").

Living Room

Future Kitchen

Courtyard view to the back yard

Okay - you get the picture - it was a dump. But it had great bones and some fun architectural features - like the columns and a curved wall. This was the way the lady left it when she moved out - who does that? Anyway - when we got engaged we had to figure out what we were going to do with this thing - and I voted for gut it. Guess what we did?

It's really not the best idea to renovate a 100 year old house in the first year you are married - that's a lot of stress. We got married in October 1989 and moved into this house in October 1990.

We first pulled out all of the old plaster and lathing (you preservationists out there don't freak out - we had to do it, it was in terrible shape) and then we put in new studs where we needed them.

DH with the old plaster - nice light fixture too.

Entrance Hall stairs - above with the red carpet, below carpet pulled up.

Future home of back stairs (see the diagonal line on the brick? That's from the original back stairs).

Upstairs Hall - we took out the wall you are looking at to let in light.

25 year old me smiling b/c we are ripping out all of the yuckiness!

After the ripping out, the house became an orderly worksite -

A pretty curved wall

An enfilade - but I didn't know that then.

Future Master Bath - it was originally a bedroom.

The back stairs that we found while ripping out and then rebuilt.

There was wall in front of this window making a trunk room, but we took it out to let in more light.

Living Room

The doors we bought to replace the front door(seen below) that was not original. They had to strip the doors and then we just varnished them - no stain. We took the door frame back to it's original size and restored the transom (can you see where it would be in the photo below?).

Here's my "after" teaser. This is the front doors after the renovation. To see the rest of the house "after" come back tomorrow. Also tomorrow, I'll tell you the final cost of the renovation - it will shock you. Stay tuned!

Illegal and totally unacceptable

According to Professor Geir Ulfstein Aftenposten and most of the world Israel armed forces had no right whatsoever to attack the Freedom Flotilla in International sea.
I support 100% that statement and do not understand why USA and the Israeli continue to support the present leaders of the country.
