ABC Wednesday--C

C is for Clifford the Big Red Dog.
A perennial favorite to young children, Clifford is a huge red dog who lives with Emily Elizabeth and has all sorts of adventures. When I say huge, I mean really huge. Clifford is a very gentle character in his books, despite his size.

Scholastic brings a warehouse sale to town a couple of times a year. They always send a Clifford costume. Here's Clifford out at the corner helping folks to realize that the sale is going on in the Convention Center.

When I did Book Fairs at school I would have a Clifford costume sent with the fair. Clifford would visit classes, or go out to recess. Kids would say, "It's Mrs. S in there."  or "Hi, Mr. L." So of course, the next time Clifford went abroad Mrs. S would accompany him to read one of the books, and another time the kids would see that Mr. L was helping guide him up the stairs. You have to keep those kids guessing, right?

One time, Clifford had to go out on a fire drill. Then it was discovered that it wasn't a drill. Something had set off the alarm other than the individuals who planned the monthly fire drills. That meant that no one could enter the building until the fire department had inspected it. So the entire student body--and Clifford--were lined up outside at their appointed fire drill stations. It started to snow. Someone got the keys to the church and we all went down there to sit till the building was okayed. We didn't know how long that would take, but fortunately, since it was a false alarm, it wasn't long till Clifford and his companions all got to go back to class.

Did I mention that Clifford has adventures? And not all of them in his books.
