Stormy Seas

It has been a somewhat torrid few weeks and hence the stunning blog silence.

My 84 year old - and generally extremely feisty (aka stroppy) - mother, started complaining of heart palpitations and generally not feeling too well. Since she's one of those "difficult" patients, the doctor didn't take her too seriously and diagnosed gastric reflux... Well, two weeks later there I was calling in the paramedics and rushing her off to the trauma unit - with pneumonia and a minor heart attack. Let it not be said that she does things in half measures. Anyway, a few days in Intensive Care and a few more days in hospital and she was back home. But we won't even go there. Suffice it to say, she is on the mend.

I, on the other hand, am somewhat stressed out and have been obliged to try and slow down. I keep forgetting that I have limitations which need respecting or I will end up flat on my back or my face. Which means other than running around like the proverbial blue-arsed fly for my mother, not much has got done. I can't even remember when I last looked at my writing or did anything remotely writerly. Actually, come to think of it, I get the distinct impression I'm in dire need of some R&R. Since that is in very short supply at present, I thought I'd just take you with me on a virtual trip to one of Cape Town's fishing harbours in the very beautiful suburb of Hout Bay - maybe next week, I'll even manage to get there in person.

Wild about Weavers

Taking some time out from writing the new manuscript, which has been getting a bit intense. Time out means time for other creativity. In this case, my other passion, photography.

About a mile from where I live, amidst middle class suburbia is a tiny oasis - a pond (or very small dam) which attracts a whole lot of birdlife. Not least of all a buzzing, squabbling flock of weaver birds. The males are gearing up for the nesting season and there is a lot of nestbuilding and displaying going on. And a LOT of noise and plenty of attitude. But, they are rather beautiful - and comical.

We start with a piece of grass...

We find a suitable location...

We start to weave...

It's hard and thirsty work...

And a chap needs some time out...

Got to make sure the front entrance is just so...

The finished product...

Now to find a wife... (and hope she doesn't tear it apart)

See what I've made, it's beautiful, isn't it?

Look at me, I'm beautiful, aren't I - you know you wanna marry me and have my babies...

Postcards from Paradise

Mauritian sunset

I know. They are very long overdue. By about a month and a half. What can I say? One, I've been beavering away, finishing the manuscript and two, it takes a bloody long time to sort through about 5000 photographs and get them down to a very small number to post here. But, that said, here they are. All I can say now is - I could really do with some of that tropical heat! (And you'll just have to bear with me on the number of tropical sunsets...)

Just one of a gazillion tropical sunsets...

Island blues? I think not!

Lest you think I've been skiving off and being a bad blogger - again - I hasten to assure you that I've only been skiving off.

See, the thing is, it's been holiday time and we've been away celebrating our second anniversary and D's birthday.

So we've been lazing here...

Sipping a bit of this...

Watching lots of these...

And spending a lot of time hanging around under this...

More photos and regular posting and service will commence again soon. We apologise for the temporary interruption!

A multifaceted holiday

Oh woe, my poor neglected blog... What can I say? I'm reprioritising, refocusing, rewriting (again)and have been much in need of a holiday. As you'll see, the blog's look has changed, along with a few other things. I think it's called metamorphosis...

But never mind all that, I'd much rather show you some happy snappies of a recent trip we took up the coast, where we managed to combine sun, sea, wildlife, landscapes and lots of fun. Hope you enjoy the virtual trip too!

There were panaramic vistas...

And there were moody seascapes...

There were lazy days at the pool, reading and sipping cool drinks...

...whilst gazing at a diamond-scattered sea...

and watching the waves crashing on the rocks

There were days spent gazing at the lagoon...

...munching oysters

And then there was wildlife, in varied forms...

And there were sunsets...

...and nightscapes...

...and more moody seascapes...

And there was even an African beach baptism!

All in all, a pretty good holiday!
