1609: Mariner Henry Hudson discovers Manhattan Island and is surprised when the indigenous people there charge him three times the usual docking fees.


1776: The British-American peace conference on Staten Island fails to stop the American Revolutionary War, but both sides do find some good diners and a mall.


1972: Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in San Francisco, California begins regular service… mostly serving irregular people.
