1665: England installs a municipal government in New York City. It's first order of business is restricting parking.


1775: British general Thomas Gage declares martial law in Massachusetts. He offers a pardon to all colonists who lay down their arms... or only promise to use them to attack Harvard students.


1967: The Supreme Court strikes down all laws that prohibit interracial marriage. But the court upholds California's ban on rich men marrying women less than 20 years younger than they are.
