Spin on Jobs
The latest jobs report shows that the economy lost 131,000 jobs in July. But Joe Biden is assuring everyone he probably just left those jobs in his other pants.
Romer Quits
Christina Romer is stepping down as chief White House economist. As a respected academic, Romer wants to get out of Washington before she forgets that two plus two is four.
BP Plugs Well
BP has finished pumping its leaking Gulf oil well with cement. Now the company go back to what it does best: getting convicted terrorists released from prison.
Hiroshima Ceremony
The White House has sent a representative to a memorial service today for the Hiroshima atomic bombing. And just to prove how sorry America is, the Obama team is clearing the way for a Mosque to be built at the bomb site.
Tax Cut Deal?
A new compromise is in the works on extending the Bush tax cuts. Democrats are now willing to agree to keeping the cuts in place for everyone… except President Bush.
August 6th
1845: The Russian Geographical Society is founded in Saint Petersburg. Ironically, the first meeting starts 45 minutes late because most of the society gets lost on the way.
1890: William Kemmler becomes the first person to be executed by electric chair. To add insult to injury, his family is sent the electric bill.
1991: Doi Takako, chair of the Social Democratic Party, becomes Japan's first female speaker of the House of Representatives. But the achievement is diluted somewhat by the fact that most Japanese men thought they were voting for Hello Kitty.
